Advancing geriatric oncology rehabilitation
Older adults recovering from cancer often face unique rehabilitation challenges. Through the OncoGR study, Amsterdam UMC is investigating how personalised geriatric rehabilitation can improve recovery and quality of life. Objective exercise testing using the Lode Corival Rehab plays an important role in assessing physical capacity and monitoring patient progress.
Researching the future of oncology rehabilitation
As the population ages, the number of older adults diagnosed with cancer continues to increase. Many of these patients experience a decline in physical functioning during or after treatment, making effective rehabilitation essential. However, there is still limited evidence on how geriatric oncology rehabilitation can best be organised and tailored to individual patients.
To address this challenge, Amsterdam UMC initiated the OncoGR study, which investigates rehabilitation pathways for older cancer patients and explores opportunities to improve outcomes through personalised care. By collecting objective clinical data alongside patient experiences, the research aims to generate evidence that supports future rehabilitation programmes.
Accurate exercise testing for personalised rehabilitation
The research team uses the Lode Corival Rehab to perform objective exercise assessments, including the Steep Ramp Test, providing reliable and reproducible measurements of physical capacity throughout the rehabilitation programme. Accurate workload control and reproducible measurements allow clinicians to objectively evaluate physical capacity, monitor recovery and support rehabilitation programmes tailored to each patient’s individual capabilities.
By combining objective exercise testing with clinical observations, the research team aims to better understand which rehabilitation strategies are most effective for older adults recovering from cancer. Ultimately, the study seeks to contribute to evidence-based rehabilitation that helps patients regain independence and improve their quality of life.
