Supporting space research with artificial gravity
The Lode Angio ergometer is part of a unique European Space Agency (ESA) research setup at Medes, where it enables exercise testing under artificial gravity. This specialized application demonstrates how reliable ergometry can support advanced human physiology and space research.
At MEDES, the Lode Angio ergometer is integrated into a large ESA human centrifuge used to study the effects of artificial gravity on the human body. The centrifuge consists of four rotating arms with a total diameter of six metres, each equipped with a horizontal bed for a test participant.
As the centrifuge rotates, centrifugal force creates a loading effect comparable to standing upright, allowing researchers to investigate human physiology under controlled artificial gravity conditions while participants perform exercise on the ergometer.
A key requirement for this application is the ability to monitor and control the ergometer remotely from the control room. This enables researchers to safely supervise every test while maintaining accurate control of the exercise protocol.
“A special application of the Lode Angio ergometer enables test participants to perform exercise testing while spinning in a centrifuge.”
